Usually the most one can ask from a momentary glimpse of Nirvana (not the band), is a pause; a slight detour on the highway of your personal thoughts. But in Ashley King’s case, her chance encoun- ter and subsequent “aha!” moment was more than a slight detour on a road to nowhere. Her random staring at a pair of goldfish was the beginning of Buddhafish Label, which later led to the release of her debut album, ironically entitled “Waiting for the Future”.
“Waiting for the Future” is a solid mix of the artist’s favorite musical influences, Jazz, Trip Hop, Hip Hop and House. Throw in a “shake the trunk” baseline, and Ashley’s signature sound was born. The 26 year old Ms. King has been described as a young Sade mixed with a rebellious Sinead O’Connor, while partying on the Isle of Ibiza.
Now on her third album entitled “Stripped Down Bare”, and coming off the success- ful release of her second album “Love Revolution” in 2011, there seems to be no stop- ping this veritable force of nature. On “Love Revolution” listeners were introduced to a much more fierce King with such tracks as “Tired of this Shit” saying it like it is; as well as a modern twist to the torch songs of by gone eras with “I Believe in Love” on which Ms. King is joined vocally by Montreal’s own “God Body” rapper Stallz. “Love Revolution was a great experience both in making and releasing, but I was in such a creative place that even as I was writing and recording L.R. I was also writing for the next album.”
Born in Toronto and raised in Montreal from the age of 2, Ashley did what most teens her age didn’t do: she joined the choir. But unlike most of her choir mates, the young King would spend her off-time listening to the likes of R-Kelly, Lauryn Hill and Tupac, while singing “His eyes are on the Sparrow”.
Fast forward to a chance encounter with the designer of Canadian fashion house NEVIK, Ashley landed an assistant design job right out of college and you think we have a fairytale story. But Ms. King’s story doesn’t end there, add to the mix working on the production of Fashion weeks for 700 plus guests and media, becoming the house model for the label and the training to handle the stress of performing while under pressure, was well under way.?Now in 2012, the 26 year old King has not only fashion and modelling under her belt , but with the release of the Award Winning KA (Kaah) Magazine, she has the added role of Art Director. KA Magazine, distributed both the USA and Canada is the win- ner of the 2011 Gutenberg Gold award for design and print excellence.
Ms. King while creating her music is definitely not one to rest on her laurels. She has also graced the cover of KA Magazine and is still the model for NEVIK 2012 campaign. Ashley is comfortable in any situation and the added exposure to the high pressure world of luxury print publications, has seen this young artist grow from one strength to another.
King is at ease performing for 100 fans as she is for 4000 and with performances in Quebec City to 3000 fans July 2011 and as well as performing at Montreal’s Club Soda with 600 adoring music lovers, to performing at the swanky St. James 5 star Hotel in Montreal, Ms. King takes it all in stride. ”I love to sing; if I have a room of seven people or 7000, I really don’t see the difference. Actually performing to seven people might even be more demanding!” Ashley has been on Montreal’s “City Lites” with host Nicole Jones where Ms. Jones enthused “I am definitely in the presence of the real thing here folks with Ms. King.”
This summer Ashley will begin the kick off to the launch of “Stripped Down Bare. “This album is exactly what the title says it is; stripped down bare.” With the sneak leak of “You Got Me Dreaming”, as sultry hip grinding modern love song, with lyrics such as “Once you get a taste of my whip,.. sit back, relax” you know Dorithy has just left Kansas. The video of the song featuring her recording the song in one take, is chilling in its simplicity. With performances at the KA Magazine Launch at The Club House in Montreal in May, followed by a headline performance at the Montreal Don’t Tell My Booker Grand Prix Event sponsored by KA Magazine, we have a strong lead up to the release in October 2012 of her third album.
“This time I really want to put it all out there, no holding back.” With the commitment to performing outdoors “busker style” Ms. King is definitely keeping it real and stripped- down bare.
Ashley King will be perferming at the KA MAGAZINE Vol.5 Launch Party on May 16th at The Club House in Montreal.

On October 31st, the night was hot at the KA MAGAZINE Best of Canada 2010 Benefit Event hosted by actress Donna Feldman. Located in a 30,000 square foot jet hangar in Montreal, the event was definitely a scene for the spectacular…and spectacular it was, amongst such luxuries as Lamborghini’s, hawker jets, private cooking with some of Montreal’s best chefs, a crazy silent auction, dj sets with Jojo Flores and Mark Anthony, a fashion show with designers Kevin Allwood (NEVIK), NADA, Amanda Lew Kee and Rudsak – not to mention, incredible performances by pianist Stephan Moccio, Pinup Saints, Anna Liani and of course, yours truly – Miss Ashley King. Ashley graced the stage in a sequins sheer top, black tights and and high, high boots- signing her songs “Take me Higher” which was written specifically as the theme song for this KA Event, “Whatever Happens” the Michael Jackson cover and “A Change gonna Come”.
Ashley was chosen as the face in the most recent GLACE RARE ICEBERG WATER Canadian advertising campaign. The image also appeared on a billboard in Montreal’s Place des Spectacles which was boosting King’s song “TRANCE” during the 2010 World Film Festival.
